Biography

Plains native, Barbara Steward, DO will join the Plains Family Medicine office in October 2023.

Steward returns to CFVH after previously completing her internship here in 2013-2014. At that time she shadowed a former ER provider and established and led an exercise program for long term care residents.

She returned a few years later during her rotations and then once again for four months as a resident physician.

“During my time at CFVH, I consistently found myself amazed, not just by the compassion and expertise exhibited by the physicians I trained under, but also by the spirit of collaboration and contributions demonstrated by every individual within the CFVH community. It reinforced to me that I had to become a part of this exceptional environment,” Steward explained.

Steward credits her father as inspiration to pursue a career in healthcare. “He encouraged me in every endeavor and has always been by my side as a steadfast confidant. I went into medicine with the aim of extending the same unwavering support he provided me to others,” shared Steward. “As a physician, I will have the opportunity to offer genuine support, trust, compassion, and assurance during people's most vulnerable and delicate moments.”

As an Osteopathic Physician (DO), Steward has extensive training in hands-on manipulation of the body, also termed OMM (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine) or OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy). She utilizes a variety of modalities to assess and treat the body to help correct structural imbalances, improve pain, and create a better "flow" in the body. Steward added, “I use this in conjunction with more traditional medicine to offer my patients a holistic approach to their care.”

“I'm excited to return to my hometown and provide care for the people who have supported and encouraged me throughout my journey. Giving back to my community feels incredibly rewarding,” explained Steward.

When asked about life outside of healthcare, Steward touts her husband, Ben who has stood by her patiently and supportively throughout her medical school journey. She added, “Our lives are further enriched by the presence of three beloved cats—Earl, Amelia, and Cabela. Recently, we welcomed a new member, Remington, an Australian Labradoodle, whose affectionate nature contributes additional warmth to our household.” They are also embracing their new roles as proud Papa and Gigi to their grandson, Hudson.

Steward enjoys cherishing moments with family and friends, lacing up her shoes for long runs, traveling, chasing sunsets, immersing herself in a captivating novel, eating chocolate, and relishing in the great outdoors with activities like hunting, fishing, and camping.

“I am proud to start my attending physician career at CFVH and eagerly anticipate collaborating with my colleagues,” Steward expressed when she was asked about what she was most looking forward to in her new role.
