She is also the newest addition to our obstetrical team. To call and schedule an OB appointment or women's annual exam, please call Plains Family Medicine at (406) 826-4810.
Jessica Valentine, MD grew up on Vashon Island, WA, an island with a population of about 10,000 people. It is located near Seattle and is only accessible by ferry or small aircraft.
While working as a volunteer fire fighter in high school, Valentine found she loved the medical calls that came into the unit and went on to become an EMT. "When I dropped patients off for further care at the hospital, I was always curious about what happened to them next and that is what ultimately influenced me to become a physician," she said. "I grew up in a community with all family practice doctors who provided very wonderful broad spectrum care, so it never even occurred to me to pursue any other specialty."
She attended medical school at the University of Washington. About half of her medical school training was completed in Montana through the WWAMI program and her residency training was done at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. After graduation, she had the opportunity to work in a variety of medical practices and settings including a busy community health center in the Seattle area and an urgent care clinic in Maui, HI.
Women’s health and obstetrical and newborn care are among her core interests in medicine. She has also received specialized training to work with patients suffering from eating disorders. "In the next couple of years, I would like to pursue additional training in integrative medicine, using natural remedies and nutrition/exercise/yoga for certain conditions," says Valentine. "I also really enjoy teaching medical students."
When asked what she loves most about working in medicine, she said, "I love connecting with people. I always know I’ve succeeded when someone puts their trust in me or is actually looking forward to coming in to see me. I also find great satisfaction in helping people feel better and figuring out their diagnosis."
"One of my favorite parts of medicine is prenatal care and delivering babies. I love the moment when a family gets to finally meet their newborn for the first time, so I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work in obstetrics here at CFVH."
"While I trained in Montana for medical school, I felt right at home and enjoyed the beauty, easy access to the outdoors, open spaces and the people we met along the way. This is truly what brought me back to this area to pursue a career."
Prior to accepting the hospitalist/OB position with CFVH, Valentine did an on site visit to check out the facility. She was impressed with how dedicated each person she met seemed to be towards making CFVH a success. Everyone was excited to contribute to the team atmosphere and high quality patient care, which is something I feel strongly about as well. CFVH offers a high number of services to patients and I appreciate that the hospital fills a definite need within the community," she added.
In her spare time, Valentine participates in a number of fitness activities including running, weight lifting and yoga. At home, she enjoys cooking, knitting and reading. Traveling to new places and camping are also among her favorites. "Fishing and golfing are on my to do list of things to try, "she said.
Valentine’s husband Sov (short for Sovereign) is currently working to complete his Bachelor’s degree in aviation to be professional helicopter pilot. He has an extensive background in personal training, massage therapy, counseling and fitness nutrition training. Today he enjoys his home-based, nutrition coaching business.
